MENAI CENTRE, BANGOR NORTH WALES M.S.C.P
Built to support the Menai Shopping Centre, the car-park is based on an original concept scheme. This has been further developed, and modified for construction using a pre-cast concrete solution developed by main contractor S.C.C. Limited.
The car-park provides parking for shoppers on four levels, one at ground and three suspended. Although the external façade takes on a modern theme, the planning authority were keen to use local materials and the use of natural Welsh slate is prominent on all four elevations. In contrast to this, the stair cores have been constructed using white acid etched concrete, with the same concrete being used for the parapet panels. To finish the external treatment inverted louvres break-up the longer elevations, colour choice to match the natural Welsh slate.
One unusual aspect of the car-park lies beneath the ground floor slab, with the use of an integrated drainage attenuation tank system, whereby rainwater from the new shopping development is stored, then released into the local watercourse in a controlled manner so as not to over-charge the drainage system.
